Women’s Right to Choose under Fire

Women in protest at the Supreme Court

In the year 2019, a woman’s right to choose is under fire. There have been eight (8) states who have passed some form of legislation to curb or downright outlaw abortion. Alabama seems to be the harshest rule of law by not having the exception for rape victims or victims of incest as a legitimate reason to have the procedure.  Everyone keeps talking about this being the initiative to get in front of the Supreme Court to challenge Roe vs. Wade. Apparently, the justices who sit on the bench in the highest court in the land are predominantly conservative. Why are women under attack? How can these actions be good for the upcoming elections in 2020? The biggest misconception is abortion is perceived as birth control.  It is not.

The right to choose gives women the chance to decide what they want their future to look like. Fundamentally, Roe vs. Wade was indoctrinated to save lives. Prior to the decision, women were dying in droves due to botched back-alley terminations of pregnancy. The decision gave women good, clean healthcare and the dignity to not have to hide in the shadows. It also made it possible for those women to have healthy pregnancies in the future.

Adult Women

For women between the ages of 25-45, unwanted pregnancies occur while using a method of birth control at an average rate of twenty-five percent. Those women have not elected to become mothers as they took precautionary measures. Most pregnancies are not discovered until nearly the end of the first trimester. A woman could realize she is with a child in her tenth week. If you have never experienced a pregnancy, then you don’t know how you are supposed to feel. Many women experience flu-like symptoms and roll with it because being sick is a familiar feeling. With the way these new laws are being issued, there is no chance to decide anything because the window of opportunity is closed.

Teenage Girls

It occurs more frequently in teenagers between the ages of 15-19. Usually, the teenager will need parents to consent to get the procedure. Often times, concerned parents will elect to have the teenager carry the child to term and put the newborn up for adoption. It is rare when parents elect for their teenage daughter to have an abortion. Hell, if that were the case, quite a few of us would not be walking around today. The show teen moms wouldn’t exist. And grandparents would not be going through the second round of child rearing.

In fact, statistics show abortion occurrences have decreased year to year since 2014. Why is that happening? It’s happening because women are staying on birth control longer and conceiving has become difficult for healthy women. When couples decide to have children, a simple roll in the hay is no longer the answer. In vitro fertilization has become increasingly more necessary. Nothing suggests that abortion laws need to be tightened. Yet, politicians are going to fall on their swords over this issue. It is like a battle cry against women in America that will not go unanswered.
