Kiddies are back to the Books

Kiddies are Back to BooksThe time has come when we say goodbye to summer break. The staying up late and eating me out of house and home will slow significantly, but not stop. Do you have to deal with the endless number of questions about stuff that really doesn’t matter to you? Well, that, too, will come to an end in my household. The kiddies are back to the books, and we are all thrilled about it.

School starts in the first week of August around these parts. It seems that everyone is excited about the upcoming event. Now, I have four middle schoolers and two kindergarteners amongst my grandchildren. The two eldest reside with me, while the others are with their parents. There is so much excitement surrounding shopping for clothes, shoes, and supplies that the atmosphere is overwhelming.

Changes for the Kiddies

It’s incredible to see how much everyone has grown over the last few months. Everyone has bigger pants and shoe sizes. My grandson is well on his way to being taller than I am, and my granddaughters are not too far behind. His voice is getting deeper, and that feels weird to me. They all share a passion for sports, gaming, dance, and cheer. My calendar is full of events to attend. Life tends to fill up when the kiddies are back to the books.

Everyone gets up on time and dons their outfits of the day. I collect first-day looks from all the parents. The smiles warm me as they leave for the school bus. I make it my business to call or text each one to get the low down on how they feel about teachers and subjects to be covered over the first school semester. It’s the littlest ones that have the deepest opinions about being in big-kid school. Navigating through halls with tons of other little people is triumphant for the two kindergartners.

Thankfully, all of my grandchildren enjoy learning, which makes the school year more enjoyable for them. Each of the big kids has been on the honor roll for years. We, as a family, expect nothing less. Within the next few weeks, as they are introduced to new ideas from mathematical and history lessons, a new round of thoughtful questions will emerge.
