While looking to participate in another 5K race, I came across the Super Mom race in Buford, Georgia. It has everything I look for in a race: closed course, good charity, and easy travel to and from the location. The entry fee was reasonable. It seems like I signed up for my second 5k race in 2025. Let’s talk about the experience.
First, the weather was rainy. I didn’t let consistent rain showers deter me from participating in my second 5k race in 2025. Preparation is key for any kind of outdoor event. I had a disposable rain poncho to shield me. Some puddles were forming and slick spots on the road that everyone avoided. It did rain the entire length of the race. Thankfully, the temperature was mild to cool throughout the event. Despite the weather, the race had over three hundred runners complete the course.
Second, my pace was garbage. I don’t know what I thought during my race, but I was strolling, not walking or jogging. My goal was at the next-to-lowest bar. I didn’t want to finish last, and that mission was accomplished. Not by much, but achieved. The pace set for my second 5k race in 2025 was 31:41, one and a half times slower than my first 5k race a month ago.
I will blame it on the weather because I walk a 5k route 4 times a week and have always finished better. I just haven’t done it in the rain before. Did I mention that I wasn’t the last to cross the finish line, but it felt like it. Lastly, the experience has encouraged me to continue signing up for other races to improve my pace and finishing time. I’ll participate in a 5k race every month until I can have a mid-grouping finish at a pace of 12:30. See, I’m not shooting for medaling in any race; I just want to finish in the top 60 runners. It’s still a low threshold, but one I have yet to meet.
